Introduction & Premise

As international documentary filmmaking continues to explore the boundaries where human identity intersects with historical trauma, few projects in recent years have sparked as much intrigue as Saddam Ra Bokosh (known internationally as Kill Saddam). Directed by the collaborative duo Aseman Toosi and Mohammad Asana Ashari, this deeply absorbing feature documentary is slated for release on March 21, 2026. By examining the bizarre, heartbreaking reality of an ordinary man whose life was hijacked by history, the film positions itself as one of the most culturally significant and psychologically complex non-fiction cinematic entries of the upcoming streaming and theatrical calendar.

Plot & Themes (Spoiler-Free)

At the center of Saddam Ra Bokosh is Kazem Banitamim, an Ahwazi man whose uncanny, jaw-dropping physical resemblance to the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein completely upended his life. For years, Banitamim functioned as an “Iranian Saddam,” capitalizing on his likeness in various entertainment and media contexts. However, the glittering promises of fame, fortune, and societal relevance eventually dissolved into a grim reality marked by marginalization, profound loneliness, and financial ruin.

The narrative pivots when a mysterious new project reaches out to Banitamim, reigniting a volatile mix of hope and paralyzing doubt. The documentary explores poignant themes:

  • The psychological weight of wearing the face of a historical villain.
  • The seduction and ultimate betrayal of the pursuit of celebrity.
  • The blurred lines between authentic selfhood and assigned performance.

Creative Vision & Direction

Co-directors Aseman Toosi and Mohammad Asana Ashari approach this high-wire subject matter with immense empathy and rigorous visual storytelling. Rather than exploiting the sheer novelty of Banitamim’s appearance, the filmmakers craft a melancholy cinematic landscape that mirrors their subject’s internal isolation. The direction utilizes stark framing, intimate observational sequences, and a contemplative pace, allowing audiences to feel the suffocating weight of a destiny dictated entirely by historical coincidence.

Performances & Cast Highlights

While fundamentally a documentary, Saddam Ra Bokosh relies heavily on the profound, unfiltered presence of its real-life subjects. Kazem Banitamim delivers a harrowing, unintentional performance of exhaustion and endurance. Alongside him, the film features compelling contributions from Masoomeh Booazar and well-known Iranian cinema fixture Reza Attaran. Their involvement adds distinct narrative texture, grounding Banitamim’s surreal daily existence within a recognizable human and cultural framework.

Production Background

Bringing Kill Saddam to the screen required delicate navigation of regional sensitivities, logistical hurdles, and deep-seated ethical considerations regarding documentary ethics. Toosi and Ashari spent extensive time embedded within Banitamim’s world, capturing the cyclical nature of his hopes as new casting calls emerge. The production serves as a testament to contemporary Iranian documentary makers’ resilience and their ability to unearth universal human truths from hyper-local, unusual premises.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Set to premiere on March 21, 2026, Saddam Ra Bokosh is a must-watch for cinephiles and documentary enthusiasts alike. It transcends standard biographical filmmaking to offer a surreal, tragicomic, and deeply moving meditation on identity. For audiences seeking intelligent, thought-provoking international cinema that challenges our obsession with fame and visage, Toosi and Ashari’s latest work promises to leave a lasting, haunting impression.
